How much does a support hire cost with Talkr?

Last reviewed September 2026. UK figures use 2026/27 tax year rates.

Short answer

A full-time technical support hire in the UK costs around £34,800 a year once employer National Insurance and pension are added to the £30,302 average salary, before recruitment fees, equipment or cover. A dedicated agent through a co-sourcing provider such as Talkr averages £1,695 a month, or £20,340 a year, with recruitment, employment, office and IT included. Offshore BPOs and freelancers can cost less per hour, usually with less continuity.

The salary is the number everyone budgets for. It is also the smallest surprise.

Employer National Insurance rose to 15% in April 2025 and the threshold dropped to £5,000. Statutory Sick Pay became payable from day one in April 2026. Recruitment fees still land in month one. And if the hire leaves within the year, most of it happens again.

How much does a support hire cost in the UK?

The average UK technical support salary is £30,302 a year, based on Indeed data updated July 2026. Add the employer costs and the annual figure rises by nearly £4,500.

Worked example: one full-time technical support hire, England, 2026/27 rates.
Cost lineAnnual costHow it is calculated
Salary£30,302UK average for technical support (Indeed, July 2026)
Employer National Insurance£3,79515% of earnings above £5,000
Employer pensionabout £720Minimum 3% of qualifying earnings
Total employment cost£34,819About £2,900 a month
Recruitment agency fee£4,545 to £6,06015% to 20% of first year salary, charged once per hire

Two reference points help. No full-time hire aged 21 or over can cost less than about £24,785 in salary alone, because the National Living Wage is £12.71 an hour from April 2026. And London salaries for the same technical roles run higher than the national average.

Worth knowing. Many small employers can claim the Employment Allowance, which takes up to £10,500 a year off the total employer National Insurance bill. For a business with only a few employees, that can cancel most of the NI line. Check eligibility with your accountant.

What costs don't show up on the payslip?

The payslip is the visible part. The rest arrives over the year.

  • Time to hire. Advertising, screening and interviewing typically take weeks of a manager's time, and the queue keeps growing while you do it.
  • HR and Payroll. Contract creation, Hour tracking and Payslips.
  • Equipment and software. Laptop, headset, helpdesk seat, security tooling.
  • Out of hours cover. Evening and weekend shifts usually mean premium pay or a second hire.

How much does staff turnover add?

This is the cost that compounds. UK contact centre attrition averages 23% a year, according to ContactBabel. In a team of ten, that is two or three leavers every year. Each one restarts the recruitment fee, the hiring time and the months it takes a new person to learn your product.

Across Talkr's teams, annual staff turnover is around 14%. The team you train is the team that stays.
